A. INTRODUCTION
Commonly, when we learn about English, our teachers taught us about listening, speaking, reading and writing. That four skills which will support us in learning English are important. One of them is listening, listening is generally considered as the primary skills for students. Now that listening is the skill that students acquire first, furthermore we can get the points of what people say, so we have to listen carefully what he/she says.
When we learn every skills of language especially English, indirectly we have learnt listening. Even students are not consious that they learn it. Moreover, students must listen carefully what their teacher is saying so students get the lesson.
Teachers usually has their techniques in listening class to teach the students in order to make their students be able to mastering this subject. If we talk about the technique especially in listening class, there must be many techniques that every teacher has. The techniques that teachers has given to students can be used to value whether its techniques work well or not.
In this part, I as the writer will explain about teaching strategies by using video in listening class that can help teachers to develop students’ skills in listening class. By using video, it is not only help to develop the skills in listening, but also perhaps in the other skills such as, vocabulary, grammar and etc.
B. DISCUSSION
This part will discuss about listening process and moreover it will explain about teaching strategies by using video in listening class. Therefore, teachers can try this way for thier students so he/she who learn English or he/she as the learner can develop their ability in learning language especially English.
1. Listening Process
Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. According to Brown (2008) “various listening inputs from outside world that go through the human ears will be caught by the sensor memory, and then it is continued by attention, short-term, rehearsal and long-term”. That means sensor memory will get first all information from the outside or he/she who is listening will get what people say by sensor memory first. After sensor memory gets the information, this information will be given to attention which will make listeners interested. Then short-term memory will catch that attention. It will be brought to rehearsal which will be continued to long-term memory. Rehearsal is functional as the place to practice and memorize the information, because it will make long-term memory can be retained longer.
In short, we can summarize that the importance of listening processes are attention and rehearsal or exercise. According to Brown (2006:2) “One only important idea for teaching listening is that listening courses must make use students’ prior knowledge in order to improve listening comprehension”. It means that teaching listening for students need to involve them in listening activities that require an obvious attention. Moreover, teachers should give them the oppurtinities to listening the materials repeatedly or using video to get their attention.
2. The Use of Video in Listening Class
Even listening is subject that related in hearing, but in this case video can help teachers to improve students’ skills in listening. Generally, students listen to the music in order to develop their ability, ofcourse it helps them. Now, not only listening to the music, but also we can use video to improve listening skills. Based on Longman on Teaching Tips “while watching television is often seen as a passive viewing experience, there are ways to turn it into a springboard for student interaction”. Following these, there are some teaching strategies by using video in listening class such as, predicting, viewing comprehension, listening practice, and discussion.
• Predicting
It means that if we use video students can watch directly who the speaker is. That makes students predicting what they say. And students can predict what will happen next.
• Viewing Comprehension
Teacher can check students’ understanding of the situation and characters by giving students specific things to look and listen for before teacher begins the lesson by watching video.
• Listening Practice
Students have to focus on the dialogue that contained in video that they watch by listening carefully for particular vocabulary words, structures, or expressions.
• Discussion
By this step, teacher can make students discuss about what they have watched. Students can discuss about character, characterization or plot of the video. And they can give their opinion about the video that they have seen.
Besides listening to the music, using video is the other way that teachers can use to improving and developing students’ skills in listening class.
C. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, listening as one of the four skills of learning English is the skills that students acquire first, especially if they have not yet learnt other skills. In listening process, through sensor memory and long-term memory there is something attantion that teachers should be given for their students, and practise as much as possible in order to students can improve their ability in listening. In this paper, it has explained that using video is more effective rather than using audio in the class. As explained, teaching strategies by using video are such as, predicting, viewing comprehension, listening practice, and discussion.
